Decimeter waves wire antenna

2 June 2026 16:01

Security guards at work asked us to make an antenna for the TV for the World Cup so they could watch Match TV. I calculated a UHF antenna made from wire.

I plan to make an antenna from wire, as it is lighter in weight than the version of the antenna from ES computer disks.

In St. Petersburg, the Match-TV channel is included in the first multiplex (35 TV channel), the same as Rossiya-1, Kultura, etc.
The second multiplex contains entertainment channels (TV channel 45).

Center frequencies of multiplexes:

  • TV channel 35 - 586 MHz,
  • TV channel 45 - 666 MHz.
The multiplex frequency occupies a band of 8 MHz - relative to the central frequency of 4 MHz down and 4 MHz up (for example, for TV channel 35 with a frequency of 582-590 MHz)

To calculate the average frequency of any UHF channel, you can use the formula:
*F = 474 + 8 (N - 21)*, where N is the channel number (21 - 69).
F35 = 474 + 8
(35 - 21) = 474 + 8 * 14 = 474 + 112 = 586 MHz

Polarization when broadcasting television programs is always horizontal, as in the proposed models.

Simple UHF antenna made of wire No. 1

The antenna is a square 140 x 140 mm, with a cable length .
The gap at the feed point is 24 mm.

Distances between conductors:

  • horizontal: 30, 28, 24, 28 and 30 mm
  • vertical: 70 and 70 mm.
The power point is shown in the figure with a circle and highlighted in red.

    antenna1

Received frequency range: 33 - 41 UHF television channels.

The estimated wire diameter for making the antenna is 1 mm (you can use 1 - 3 mm
or section 0.785 - 7 mm2).

Simple UHF antenna made of wire No. 2

The antenna is a rectangle 140 x 280 mm.
The gap at the feed point is 16 mm.

Distances between conductors:

  • horizontal: 32, 30, 16, 39 and 32 mm
  • vertical: 70, 70, 70 and 70 mm
The power point is shown in the figure with a circle and highlighted in red.

    antenna2

Received frequency range: 31 - 42 UHF television channels.

The estimated wire diameter for making the antenna is 1 mm (you can use 1 - 3 mm
or section 0.785 - 7 mm2).

Antenna No. 3. Antenna option No. 1 for the FM range

I converted the antenna to the FM range.
The antenna completely repeats option No. 1 but has increased dimensions.

  • Square 838 x 838 mm, with a train 759 mm long.

Distances between conductors:

  • horizontal: 180 167 144 167 180
  • vertical: 419 and 419 mm.
    Received frequency range: 92 - 101.3 MHz.

Estimated wire diameter for making the antenna: 2 mm (you can use a diameter of 2 - 3 mm
or cross section 3 - 7 mm2).

Polarization when broadcasting radio programs on Finnish radio horizontal, at Russian radio vertical(the antenna must be rotated 90 degrees relative to the X axis).
