Hobbies: benefit or harm?

30 March 2023 16:19

A tragic event occurred in the family. I tried to figure out whether this was due to... a hobby.

The positive effect of a hobby is self-development, increased self-confidence and stress relief. But, if there is more than one hobby for two, one person’s stress decreases, but the other’s does not. That is, one person (me) improves his condition, and the second (she) is simply out of business.

If the second person - the spouse - is “out of business,” she may develop chronic stress because she sees her uselessness and detachment.
Sharp responses - “go away, don’t bother me” - lead to the release of stress hormones. Stress always leads to poor circulation. And ultimately to death.

As for the radio hobby in its current form, with the cost of devices exceeding 100,000 rubles - such a price indicates the “manicness” of the owner. As you know, correspondence competitions reveal not only the skill of operators, but also the identification of the most powerful thing in the “arms race” - setups.

The most negative effect of a hobby is disharmony in relationships. If one person likes drawing or photography, or maybe knitting (humanitarian direction), and another likes delving into the technological problems of hardware (technical direction), these directions do not touch.

Examples of good and useful hobbies for the whole family- tourism, travel, hiking (light hiking), swimming, running, dancing, going to the theater, growing vegetables in the garden, picking mushrooms. What a pity that these hobbies
forgotten!

Radio sports is a distinctly individual sport, and design and programming, system administration take away from reality. These and other hobbies are in no way conducive to a happy family life. For example, reading the news or playing games takes up the evening and night time before bed, which affects the duration of sleep and prevents night rest, restoration of health and strength.

Thus, the hobby does more harm than good. In the Bible, in the New Testament, the second commandment reads:

You shall not make for yourself an idol or any likeness of anything in the sky above, or on the earth below, or in the water under the earth. Do not worship them or serve them; For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me, and showing mercy to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Any one-pointedness towards things that are not from God is fraught with consequences. If you do not notice what is happening around you, if you are “fixated” on one direction in which there is a desire to become the best (vanity), this is where indifference comes from. i.e., a decrease in love between people.

In the USSR, the concept of “harmonious personal development” was often mentioned in the literature for teachers.
That is, if you draw the axis in different directions for

  • physical development
  • intelligence
  • feelings of beauty (music)
  • personality strength (will)
  • values (motivation)
  • self-esteem
They should all form a shape similar to a flower or a circle. Unfortunately, life doesn’t work out that way; some directions dominate over others.
For example, most sedentary hobbies do not contribute to improved health and better exercise performance.

I would especially like to note “smartphoneization” - you can read the news while lying on the couch. Which increases awareness to the detriment of other human qualities, including physical condition. As you know, without physical activity, heart failure develops.

Another negative consequence of the hobby is the littering of the apartment with accessories (for example, wires, cables, boxes, bags of parts or devices).
For avid fishermen, this means fishing gear - fishing rods, landing nets, sets of spinners. and radio amateurs have baluns, tuners, etc. "junk".
If the antennas are located on the balcony, the balcony becomes cluttered. For another person, especially if the spouse is a homeowner, this is extra stress.

The most obvious disadvantage of the hobby is "escapism"(avoidance of reality, escape from reality). I’m writing only about myself: the inability to find a better-paid job leads to a search for new meanings and activities. This does not solve the problem, but only preserves it. At the same time, the unresolved problem is shelved and the situation is preserved for many years. And life goes by. And loved ones do not last forever.

During a passing life under the banner of hobbies with technology or blogs, not only is “the greatest luxury - human communication” with loved ones rejected, but myopia and callousness may set in, which does not allow timely recognition of the deterioration in the health of a loved one, a spouse... To refer her for blood tests (cholesterol) and an ECG (electrocardiogram).

Perhaps this is all I wanted to write on this topic. Love each other, be sensitive, attentive to each other.
Remember that the lifetime is limited, and the black streak can begin at any time.

If anyone thinks that I am exaggerating, remember the quote from “The Master and Margarita” by Bulgakov:

Yes, man is mortal, but that would not be so bad. The bad thing is that he is sometimes suddenly mortal, that's the trick!
