Priory Park - part 2

As is known from history, Paul I built the Priory Palace for the knights of the Order of Malta. Paul I took over the protectorate over which, and the island of Malta, after the French Revolution (July 14, 1789 – November 9, 1799).

See part 1 (beginning)

Paul I at the request of the Knights of Malta, took over the protectorate of Malta on January 4 1797 year - the "Convention concluded with the Sovereign Order of Malta and its Preeminence Grand Meister - on the establishment of this Order in Russia"_ was signed. Malta was supposed to strengthen Russia's influence in the Mediterranean. The Knights of Malta hoped to receive protection from the actions of France and financial assistance from the Russian Empire. Thus, the Order of Malta received subsidies from Russian nobles who, according to the Convention, were given the opportunity to join the Order of Malta.

Russia was supposed to create a naval base in Malta to oppose the Ottoman Empire and, possibly, England. Paul paid great attention to the fleet and in 1798 the emperor approved a plan for the development of the fleet, which involved the construction of 60 battleships.

The plans of Paul I were not destined to come true - in June 1798 the French occupation of Malta began in the year by the troops of Napoleon Bonaparte, who also wanted to make Malta a military outpost on the Mediterranean Sea (see.Wikipedia article - French occupation of Malta).

September 5 1800 year Malta was captured by the British.

Then Paul I broke the alliance with England and began to prepare for war with her in alliance with France. (source).

In March 1801, Paul I was killed under mysterious circumstances in the Mikhailovsky Palace in St. Petersburg (Wikipedia). The connection of the conspirators with the British has not been proven, although it was suspected:"Paul's foreign policy was contrary to the interests of England. England probably subsidized the conspirators".

The protector of the Order of Malta was the son of Paul I -Alexander I, who reigned from 1801 to 1825.

Alexander I crossed out his father's policy regarding the Order of Malta. So, he resigned from his duties as a grandmaster and removed the coat of arms - the Order of John of Jerusalem from the list of coats of arms of the Russian Empire. Negotiations were held on the Maltese issue between Russia, England and Naples from November to December 1801. As a result, the countries declared neutrality of the island. In 1810, Alexander I took away their palace from the Knights of Malta (source) and transferred management of the Order's finances to the State Treasury (source). Thus, Alexander I curtailed all the anti-English plans of his father. However, in 1807-1812 there was a Russian-English war, and in 1812 - a Russian-French Patriotic War. On January 20, 1817, Alexander I forbade nobles to wear the Order of St. John. Motivation: "The Order of the Russian Priory no longer exists."

If you follow the path along the Priory Palace, you climb a hill. In my opinion, an analogy is possible here - a hill in Jerusalem, where on the slope Jesus read to the assembled people Mountain sermon. As you know, the Order of Malta was founded in Jerusalem during the era of the Crusades. In 1080 - and submits to the Pope. The symbol of the order is also a cross symmetrical in all 4 directions. The heavenly patron of the order is Saint John Baptist - the closest predecessor of Jesus Christ, who predicted the coming of the Messiah.

Initially it had two names - Filkino and Glukhoye.
The lake is named after a peasant named Filka, who drowned here after deciding to take a shortcut in winter on thin ice in order to bring firewood directly to the imperial palace.
