The beginning of Lent

3 March 2025 23:47

The time of Great Lent has come.

In the evening, divine services are held in Orthodox churches - the reading of the Great Penitential Canon of St. Andrew of Crete with lit candles.

The task of fasting is to realize one’s own sinfulness and change oneself, increasing the chances of entering the Kingdom of Heaven. Even if we don’t achieve it, will we at least try?

Fasting contains serious restrictions and ascetic exercises.

The Typikon prescribes complete abstinence from food in the first week of Great Lent (except for nursing mothers and the infirm), with the exception of Wednesday and Friday - after the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts you can eat a little.

The first week and subsequent ones (six weeks of fasting in total) are described on the ABC website:
*First week

During Great Lent celebrating birthdays and weddings is unacceptable. Laughter/fun is inappropriate polyeating and heavy drinking. Verbosity and discussion of vain things sound like a sharp dissonance to the quiet, almost wordless atmosphere of Great Lent. Which, for example, broadcast radio stations are full of.

Prayer of the Venerable St. Ephraim the Syrian is read throughout the weeks of Great Lent. Starting from Wednesday before Lent, and 3 days after the end - at the beginning of Holy Week.

More information about the prayer of Ephraim the Syrian and its text can be read on the websites.

From my point of view, it is useless to convince anyone of anything. Anyone who wants to will turn to God himself.
