Museum-reserve "Gatchina" - part 2

In the first part, I very briefly reviewed the history of Gatchina Park. Now I would like to dwell on the development of agriculture and industry in Gatchina. Because on April 5, 2021, Gatchina became the capital of the Leningrad region.

Industrial zones of Gatchina

If you drive along the Kyiv highway from the south towards St. Petersburg, you can see how fields lie on all sides of Gatchina and there are small villages - Novye Chernitsy, Lyadino, Vakkolovo. On the right side of the Kyiv highway, agricultural lands are visible.

In the village of Bolshie Kolpany, the main bypass route to St. Petersburg goes sharply to the right. On the left side there remains the old entrance to Gatchina, which is called Kievskoye Shosse - an old and narrow road that turns into Kievskaya Street in the city of Gatchina and then into October 25 Avenue. (Nobody goes to St. Petersburg this way, through Gatchina, for fear of numerous traffic light jams).

To the west of the Kievskoe highway, in the village of Bolshiye Kolpany there is the first industrial zone (Industrial zone-1, 2):

  • Production company "Voskhod"

In the village of Malye Kolpany there is an industrial zone:

  • Feed mill -Gatchina Feed Mill- food for dogs, cats, fish, poultry.
  • Plant LLC "Megaprofil"
  • Joint Stock Company "SELKHOZTEHNIKA" (tractors)

A little to the north is the Rechnoye district - near the Kolpinskaya river and the historical district Hare heddle.

Near the remiz, to the west of Kievskaya Street, there used to be an airfield - the first airfield in Russia (1911). Now this area "Aerodrome" is built up with standard residential buildings. The only reminder left is a monument - a MiG-21 fighter taking off.

On the right side at the entrance to Gatchina from the south there is a green area - Priory Park. The area is called Alexandrovskaya Sloboda. To the east of Prioratsky Park there is Varshavsky Station.

North of Warsaw Station, east of Sylvia Park is the center of Gatchina - historical buildings 4 floors high, on the eastern side of 25th October Avenue. It is obvious that the buildings were built during the reconstruction of the city after the war. On the easternmost outskirts you can see more modern buildings built during the Brezhnev era (1970s) - several nine-story buildings right up to the railway and Chekhov Street. To the east, behind the railway, industrial zone No. 1 begins, which was also built after the war.

На On Sobornaya Street there is a market in the city of Gatchina. (Place on Google map). Cathedral of St. Paul the Apostle - address Sobornaya street, 26. To the north of this area is the Gatchina Institute of Economics, Finance, Law and Technology -GIEFPT.

The main park of Gatchina is Silvia Palace Park and forest park Menagerie are located across the 25 October Avenue, in the western part of Gatchina, next to the Baltic Station. The closest stop to Gatchina on the Baltic railway line is Marienburg.

Almost 90,000 residents live in Gatchina and most of them are employed in enterprises located nearby in the industrial zone of Gatchina:

  1. Gatchina Feed Mill
  2. OJSC "Ilim Gofra" - cellulose production
  3. Plant of building structures (OZSK). Large enterprise

Agriculture and light industry of the Gatchina region were cut

The Leningrad region was formed in 1927 and initially existed as a rural agricultural region. The main peasant activity is crop production. Later, livestock farming began to be developed in the Leningrad Region. During “perestroika” and after the collapse of the USSR, agricultural enterprises in the agricultural sector created in Soviet times went bankrupt.

(A complete list of closed collective and state farms is contained in the archive "United Archive Fund "Liquidated Trade Organizations of the Gatchina District of the Leningrad Region", some of the information is [in Google](https://www.google.ru/search?q=%D0%B3%D0%B0%D1%82%D1%87%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%B0+%D0%B7%D0%B0 %D0%BA%D1%80%D1%8B%D1%82%D1%8B%D0%B5+%D1%81%D0%BE%D0%B2%D1%85%D0%BE%D0%B7%D1%8B&newwindow=1)).

Livestock farming has become the main specialization of the Leningrad region - it accounts for 68% of gross output.

A real disaster in the Gatchina region has become the thickets of a poisonous weed - Sosnovsky's hogweed - in the places of former fields and in ditches. They are fighting hogweed.
Typical views of nature from the Kyiv highway (E95) and the surrounding area (c) Google:

Today, there are 22 agricultural farms in the region - mainly livestock farms, including 7 dairy farms. There are breeding farms for raising livestock. Pig breeding is represented by OJSC "Plamya Breeding Plant" (pig population is 8.0 thousand heads), due to the bankruptcy of the enterprises of OJSC "New World" and LLC "Rusbelgo" the number of pigs was reduced by 22.0 thousand heads. There are several poultry farms near Gatchina. For example, in the village of Pudost, Novaya St., 49, there is a poultry farm "Skvoritsy" - in 2012 declared bankrupt.

There are also successful poultry farms - "Lenoblptitseprom" website. and LLC "Perepelochka" in Tervolovo. In the village of Pizhma there is a farm "Farm+" (guinea fowl egg).

Another example of a successful food production enterprise is the Galaktika dairy plant. This is a fully automated plant where many types of dairy products are produced under the brands “Bolshaya Kruzhka”, “Sudarynya” and “Svezhee”. This dairy also produces Valio yoghurts and smoothies. Opened in 2008, the original owner is the Finnish concern Valio and the regional Lenoblmoloko (55% shares). However, recently “Galaktika” is looking for a new investor.

Light industry

As of May 25, 2021, the private Gatchina Knitting Factory (GTF) is operating, TIN 7737008974 - headcount of employees 7 people, revenue 2.2 million rubles.

For unknown reasons, our industry is included in the category of the most risky. This makes lending to the industry difficult. Most businesses have problems with lending, especially those that work with networks. Banks are now lending to the industry not only not cheaply, but also reluctantly.
-- President of the Russian Union of Entrepreneurs of Textile and Light Industry (Soyuzlegprom) Andrey Razbrodin.

The city of Gatchina as a tourism center

St. Petersburg is visited annually by 2.4 million citizens of the Russian Federation and 0.5 million foreigners.

The distance of Gatchina from St. Petersburg is 45 km, but there is a convenient way of access - the railway. Travel time from the Baltic Station to Gatchina is 1 hour 2 minutes.

Below I continue to publish photographs from the Silvia landscape park (after my visit to Gatchina on May 17, 2021).
