The most beautiful winter phenomenon - ice needles

On January 3, 2023, against the backdrop of a frost of -24 degrees, “ice needles” - ice crystals formed at a high altitude, playing in the sunlight with all the colors of the rainbow - were observed falling out of the clear sky.

Ice needles, unlike perihelion, do not hang on the horizon, but nearby, in front of the observer. It is not visible in the photograph, but they represent a stream of small “sparks” - ice crystals - falling from the sky. It is difficult to determine the distance to the flow by looking at it from 2 to 100 meters (individual crystals are visible). That is, sometimes you get the feeling that you can touch the “rain” of ice crystals with your hand. Indeed, on objects, for example, on glass, ice crystals fall in the form of a fine powder - powder. The intensity in different places is different, according to my observations, the area of ​​crystal fallout is about 10 km2 i.e. They fall out locally and you can see them only a few times in your life, in the most severe frosts. Today in St. Petersburg the record negative temperature of minus 24 degrees Celsius during the day may be broken.
