E-mail client "Evolution" for Gmail

26 January 2022 16:09

Gmail.com mail is usually tied to the Android smartphone, but it can also be used on a personal computer using the Evolution mail program, which is a free client for Linux OS, with a standard public license GNU version 2.0.

A unique feature of Gmail is its use of OAuth2 two-factor authentication. Due to Google's implementation of the OAuth2 security system, most Linux e-mail programs (such as Geary and Sylpheed) don't work with it. Gmail is supported by Thunderbird and Evolution. Thunderbird is lighter (it uses about 200 MB less RAM) and faster. I also like Evolution's interface because it's uncluttered and well translated into Russian. Evolution understands HTML emails and the domestic encodings UTF-8, Win1251, and KOI-8R. I use Gmail for correspondence with Roskomnadzor regarding radio station registration.

Installation of the package Evolution

The program is part of the Ubuntu and Linux Mint:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install evolution

The label for launching the program is created in the _ "Office" folder, because Evolution positions itself as a "package for group work" (Groupware Suite). Indeed, Evolution supports the following opportunities:

* Email * (automatically synchronized with Google Gmail)
Google Calendar ** (File - Create - Google calendar

Calendar functions

The tasks and activities of the calendar (with reminders) created on the PC instantly fall into the smartphone. Since they are synchronized with Google.
Calendar

From the smartphone, the tasks and events by the default did not get into the Evolution calendar:

  • They need to be immediately created in the Google Type of Username@gmail.com, not PC SYNC, not
  • Either manually copy the event from PC Sync to the Gmail account (made on a smartphone - you need to press a finger on a gray event - three points - copy in username@gmail.com) - from gray, they become blue on the smartphone and immediately fall into the Evolution on the PC.

    Smartphone

New events from a PC to a smartphone and back are transmitted instantly, they do not need to synchronize them as mail.
Calendar on PC

On a PC, tasks and events have the color that was set when creating a new calendar event on a smartphone.

Reminders jump out on a smartphone and a computer at the same time.
