APRS over TCP-IP

10 June 2020 10:47

APRS over TCP-IP (over the Internet) is very easy to set up.

For APRS and automatic transmission of coordinates over TCP-IP, you can use the same Xastir program, configured in a special way:

1) In the Xastir menu, select the item "interfaces" - "Interface control"
menu

2) In the window, click the "Add"
supplement

3) Select the item "Internet Server"
from the list of options, select Internet Server

5) Configure the interface:
Configuring a TCP-IP APRS Server

  • Allow transmitting -Included
  • Host -194.186.45.251
  • Port -14580
  • Pass-code -your APRS password
  • Filter parameters -m/500
  • Comment - any comment, for example "APRS Russia"
  • Reconnect on net failure -Included

And press "OK"

Note: I received the APRS password (pass-code) by sending a copy of my certificate of callsign formation to the APRS-IS website. Now this procedure simplified.

6) In the menu File - Configure - Timing check that the sending of packages is with a long period - for stationary objects once every 15-30 minutes, for mobile objects - once every 1-5 minutes.
Intervals

7) Specify the coordinates of the station on the map. For more information, see Article.

8) In the menu Interfaces - Interface control disable all interfaces except the TCP-IP that you just created.
To do this, go inside each item and uncheck the boxes
"Activate on startup" - unchecked (OFF)
"Allow transmitting" - unchecked (OFF)

9) Activate the interface "Internet Server" - set the checkboxes:
"Activate on startup" - checked (ON)
"Allow transmitting" - checked (ON)

10) B File - Configure - Station check the station settings, in particular the SSID (-5 for TCP-IP)

11) Now you need to enable the interface in the menu Interfaces - choose our interface - Start
launching
If everything is fine, the interface will change to the "UP".

12) Perform a one-time transfer of coordinates Interfaces - Transmit Now!

Possible problems and solutions

  1. If the coordinates are not transmitted, the interface in the Interfaces will be in a state of "ERROR". This means that an error has occurred: there is no connection to the APRS server (the Internet can be checked with the ping command 194.186.45.251). Check your network connection. As soon as the Internet is available, APRS data transmission will begin.

  2. If the server is not responding for some reason (which is unlikely), you can specify other options as the IP address.
